Hi! here's a suggestion for an activity for you to teach your students on modals:
Topic : Modals – Requests (can, could, will, would, would you mind…)
General Objective : To help students to use modals in asking for requests.
Learning Outcomes : Students should be able to:
Identify modals through role play.
Interact using modals through game.
Instructional Aids: - Scripts
- Cards for modal game “ Mission Modals”
Set Induction
1. Initiate the lesson by using small talks like asking them on how was their weekends or maybe by asking them what did they buy for their recess time. You may want to add some joke and make it casual as this will help the students to get comfortable with the discussion :)
2. lead the discussion towards their experiences on making request or how do they do it when they want to ask something. (you may want to ask them to act on how do they normally do it)
Development
1. Tell them that they are going to play a game. it is called "Mission: Modals"
2. Provide them with clear instructions on how do they are going to play the game and make sure that they really understand the instructions.
Instructions:
Game: “Mission: Modals”
Equipment needed:
“Happy family” playing card

Instructions:
i. <!--[endif]-->You are a secret agent and you are assigned to save a family at an old Prisoner of War Camp (P.O.W)
ii. <!--[endif]-->Your job is to find each and every member back. You have sneaked into the camp to find the family members. You have to be quick because you do not have enough time before the guards see you.
iii. Each of you will be given 4 cards that have been jumbled up. Each card represents each and every family member that you have to find.
iv. In order to get all family members together, you have to move around the camp and search for the family members.
v. <!--[endif]-->In searching the family members, you have to use proper sentence in asking request and you are required to include these words (can, could, will, and would.. and do not forget to say 'Please') in your request/sentence
vi. Your wish will not be fulfilled if you do not use proper request (sentence).
vii. The first 5 persons who manage to find all his/her family members will be the winner and the game will stop.
viii. The others who do not manage to find all family members will be caught by the guards and will be kept in the refugee camp.
ix. Remember! This is a secret mission. You have to move quietly inside the camp because you don’t want the guards to see you. There are so many of them and they are brutal.
GOOD LUCK AGENTS!
3. after you have finished playing this game, announce the winners and this is the time for you to explain what have they learn just now and you explain on how to use modals especially when requesting.
4. i hope that this will help to give you some ideas and you may alter or any other activities that you think are suitable.. happy teaching!
