Guessing Game

Hello and greetings everyone! still cracking your head on how to teach adjective? how about a game for the activity part? here's how you may want to play the game...

Proficiency Level: Advanced
Instruction:
i)                    Teacher provides a stack of cue cards that has been jumbled up. Each card consists a picture and list of words that describe the picture.
a.       Eg: a picture of a frog
                                                                          i.      Green
                                                                        ii.      Hop
                                                                      iii.      Amphibian

examples of cue cards:

ii)                  Students are divided into four or five groups.
iii)                Representatives of each group will come out one at a time to play the game with the group members.
iv)                Thirty seconds will be given to the representative to describe the picture without using the words listed in the cue card. The representative cannot use gestures as well. Only words that are not listed in the cue card are allowed to be used!
v)                  The group members must then guest what the picture is based on the description by the representative.
vi)                Each turn will only take 30 seconds.
vii)              One point will be given for each correct answer and the group with the most card answered will be the winner.

feeling excited enough?? Happy teaching and have fun!!! :)

Passive Voice

Hello everyone! How are you?
In this entry, i will show you on how to make it interesting for students to practice passive voice by answering comprehension question from a movie that they watch.

Teaching comprehension has always been associated with the use of text as the stimulus. Students sometimes get bored with too much use of text in their lesson.

Now let us use movie as an alternative for us to teach comprehension and focusing on the use of passive voice to describe incidents.

1. Select either a short video (no more than 30 minutes) or an excerpt
from a longer video. Use about 10 minutes of an action-packed
scene. For instance, the movie The Guardian (2006)

2. Go through the questions with the students on the worksheet so the students know in advance what to look for when you show the video. Use a variety of tenses in your questions.

Examples:
What happened to the victim's wife?
Why do you think the officer is angry at Jake?
What do you think will happen to Jake next?

make sure the students understand that they must reply in the
passive. They cannot answer, “The husband tries to strangle her wife,” to the first
question (above). They must answer with a response such as “the wife is strangled by her own husband” Students have a tendency to answer in the active voice for a question in the future, so you
may want to solicit some responses in the passive or have the students brainstorm answers to the questions in groups.

3. Show the video. Let the students take notes if they want.

4. Arrange the students in groups of three or four to discuss the video and try to form answers to the questions. you, as the teacher, has to guide them if they face any problem constructing the passive sentences because sometimes creating passive sentences might be quite hard for students with limited proficiency.

Happy teaching!! :)

Aladdin OST – A Whole New world.

I can show you the world
………………, ………………., ……………..
Tell me, princess, now when did
You last let your heart decide?

I can open your eyes

Take you wonder by wonder
Over, sideways and under
On a …………….. carpet ride

A whole ………….. world

A new …………… point of view
No one to tell us no

Or where to go
Or say we're only dreaming

A whole new world

A ………………. place I never knew
But now from way up here
It's …………….  ………………..
That now I'm in a whole new world with you
Now I'm in a whole new world with you

……………………… sights
………………………. feeling

Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling

Through an endless diamond sky

A whole ……….. world
Don't you dare close your eyes
A hundred thousand things to see
Hold your breath - it gets better
I'm like a shooting star
I've come so far
I can't go back to where I used to be

A whole new world

Every turn a surprise
With new horizons to pursue
Every moment red-letter
I'll chase them anywhere
There's time to spare
Let me share this whole new world with you

A whole new world

That's where we'll be
A ………………. chase
A wondrous place
For you and me

Object Improvisation!!!

Hello there! in this entry i'm going to show you on how to integrate drama in teaching English.
Drama is fun and it challenges creativity. Besides, drama makes a great tool in teaching all parts of language skills area. However, today, we are going to focus on how to use drama in teaching speaking.

Teaching steps:
1. Arrange the students into several group and do not make it too large. six to seven people in a group would do the trick.
2. Provide each group with a random item/object such as a broom, an empty water bottle,a pail, a bowl, a shawl...ANYTHING! (it's up to you on how are you going to test their imagination)

3. Provided with the objects that has been given to each group, they are required to creatively create a sketch by using the objects given as their prop.
4. It is up to the student's creativity on how do they want to manipulate their prop creatively, and create an interesting sketch out of that.
5. The sketch has to be in approximately two minutes length, and everyone is required to have equal lines.

Gentle Reminder:
1. This lesson is meant for advance proficiency level students.
2. Make sure that all students are clear with the instruction given before you start the activity because you do not want your classroom turns into havoc when they get too excited.
3. this activity can be altered/adjust depending on the content that you would like to stress on. for instance, if you are teaching Noun, you may want the students to use a lot of noun, in manipulating the object given in creating their sketch.
4. students love praises and comments. do not forget to give comments for each sketch, and praise them.
5. at the end of the lesson, you may wrap it up by stressing on the content that you focus on that day such as Noun, Adjective, etc..

Have Fun!! and Happy Teaching! :)

"MISSION: MODALS"

Hi! here's a suggestion for an activity for you to teach your students on modals:

Topic    : Modals – Requests (can, could, will, would, would you mind…)

General Objective       : To help students to use modals in asking for requests.

Learning Outcomes     : Students should be able to:
Identify modals through role play.
Interact using modals through game.

Instructional Aids:      -     Scripts
                                 -          Cards for modal game “ Mission Modals”

Set Induction

1. Initiate the lesson by using small talks like asking them on how was their weekends or maybe by asking them what did they buy for their recess time. You may want to add some joke and make it casual as this will help the students to get comfortable with the discussion :)

2. lead the discussion towards their experiences on making request or how do they do it when they want to ask something. (you may want to ask them to act on how do they normally do it)

Development

1. Tell them that they are going to play a game. it is called "Mission: Modals"
2. Provide them with clear instructions on how do they are going to play the game and make sure that they really understand the instructions.

Instructions:

Game: “Mission: Modals”

Equipment needed:
 “Happy family” playing card

Instructions:

i.      <!--[endif]-->You are a secret agent and you are assigned to save a family at an old Prisoner of War Camp (P.O.W)
ii.      <!--[endif]-->Your job is to find each and every member back. You have sneaked into the camp to find the family members. You have to be quick because you do not have enough time before the guards see you.
iii.     Each of you will be given 4 cards that have been jumbled up. Each card represents each and every family member that you have to find.
iv.     In order to get all family members together, you have to move around the camp and search for the family members.
v.      <!--[endif]-->In searching the family members, you have to use proper sentence in asking request and you are required to include these words (can, could, will, and would.. and do not forget to say 'Please') in your request/sentence
vi.     Your wish will not be fulfilled if you do not use proper request (sentence).
vii.    The first 5 persons who manage to find all his/her family members will be the winner and the game will stop.
viii.  The others who do not manage to find all family members will be caught by the guards and will be kept in the refugee camp.
ix.    Remember! This is a secret mission. You have to move quietly inside the camp because you don’t want the guards to see you. There are so many of them and they are brutal.

GOOD LUCK AGENTS!

3. after you have finished playing this game, announce the winners and this is the time for you  to explain what have they learn just now and you explain on how to use modals especially when requesting.
4. i hope that this will help to give you some ideas and you may alter or any other activities that you think are suitable.. happy teaching!
